Covered in lichens
Lichens are a mini ecosystem made of fungi, algae and bacteria, which has proven to be a winning concept. The algae make use of the energy from light, while the fungi protect the algae from dehydration, storms and extreme cold. Lichens are “survival artists” that can cope with almost all types of weather.
The concentric ring lichen dies in the middle as it grows outwards,
giving it its name. Lichens grow incredibly slowly. Big specimens of the map lichen can be over a thousand years old.
