Welcome to Södra Årefjällen – world class outings
Here you find a selection of our favourite routes – from gentle walks to more challenging summit hikes. For extra interest, some trails have information about local heritage and our amazing flora and fauna. These routes have a grey dotted line on the map.
A system of signs makes the routes easy to follow. The summer trails have orange signs that start with a 2. There are plenty of different places to take a break along the way – beautifully situated wind shelters and sometimes restaurants/cafés.
The routes are graded by difficulty, so it’s easy to find one that suits you. The level of difficulty increases with how hilly and physically demanding the route is. Green routes are for people who prefer gentle walks along gravel roads or in sheltered terrain. A Black route is either steep or long, thus a rout for the physically fit.
You can make a difference!
All the trails in Södra Årefjällen are on private land, except those that start in Fångåmon, Vallbo, Östra Vålådalen and Vålådalen.
No public money is available for trail maintenance on private land. If the environment is damaged, landowners can refuse to have trails there. The Right of Public Access gives you freedoms, but also responsibilities: “Don’t disturb, don’t destroy”.
Paying the trail fee makes a huge difference! It allows us to build plankways, lay woodchips and use other methods so the ground is not disturbed. This also makes the trails easier to walk or run along, and we can build additional picnic spots and wind shelters, making the outdoors accessible to more people.
Thanks to you paying the trail fee, we hope that our children and grandchildren will be proud to inherit incredible mountain landscapes.
